Holmes Band Sponsorship Program in the Press!
Holmes Middle School (HMS), located in Wheeling, Illinois, is in the heart of a constantly changing community. The percentage of students from families classified as low income has increased from 62.9% in 2009 to 75.4% in 2013, according to the Illinois School Report Card.
This is most noticeable every September at the annual beginning band registration night. The number of students enrolled in the band program has been decreasing steadily. In 2007 the band reached its peak enrollment at 80 students. For the 2013-2014 school year only 53 enrolled. In response to an informal survey of families of students who did not enroll in band, we found that the primary reason was the $40 per month instrument rental fee.
The HMS Band Sponsorship Program was set up to aid those families who cannot afford to rent an instrument. In addition to monetary donations, we also welcome donations of band instruments, including flutes, clarinets, oboes, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, baritones, tubas, percussion instruments, and drum sets. Monetary donations of any amount help refurbish donated instruments that are not playable so that they can be loaned to a student from a low income family. On average, approximately $100 will refurbish an instrument to make it playable. With donated, refurbished instruments, we are able to offer instrument rental for $8 per month, which most families are able to afford.
